Worse than a crying baby on an airplane

“If you’ve ever flown on a commercial flight—domestic or international—you’ve invariably encountered fussy-baby-on-the-same-flight syndrome. I fly a lot for business. A lot.

And I can tell you that I’ve experienced the all-too-upset baby who struggles to clear their ears, battles baby teeth breaching the gums, and the “gas bubble meltdown” that leads to incessant and utterly-unrelenting screaming and crying.

 Much like a business just getting off the ground… or even getting to the next level, your business can suffer from some of these metaphorical traits.

It can be pretty bad. But you know what’s worse?

Self-Righteous Business Traveler who can’t understand why that parent
“won’t shut the kids up”.


Self-Absorbed Millennial, whose “vast life experience” qualifies them to question why the parent(s) “won’t just do something about” the crying and who huffs and puffs and glares in the direction of the baby.

Or the incensed retirees who feel entitled to their peace and quiet on their flight to Maui, since they “sacrificed’ for a life with no children of their own for a career that allows them tor travel freely.

 These arm-chair quarterbacks of business just don’t get it. 

They’ve never tried building a business from scratch let alone sticking to it. They just don’t understand why you don’t quit and go back to a “safe, secure” job (as if there is such a thing anymore).

And then there’s the rest of us. Who have kids. Who have businesses.

Who’ve been there. 

We’ve earned our 10,000 steps on the fitness tracker from walking the kid

up…and down…and up…and down the aisle.

Doing the work. Putting in the time.

We’ve arm-wrestled the disgusting diaper in the phone-booth-size lavatory, fumbled for the burp cloth mere seconds too late to catch the cascade of the recent meal all over our (once) clean shirts.

We’ve been there. And we don’t bitch and complain.

We send a little prayer, perhaps an encouraging smile or even an offer to help if we can.

We are the only ones qualified to talk smack, and yet, we don’t. We’ve faced those challenges head-on in business and yet, we keep charging forth in spite of the challenges that arise.

Because we get it.

That’s the kind of life experience you have to have in order to help people rise to a higher level of success in business and life.

Not the “Johnny/Jenny-Come-Lately” fake-it-till-you-make-it wannabe. Not the recently “certified”  expert with zero mileage on the coaching odometer.

Real people. Real experience. Real solutions.
