Twists of Fate – A series of Short Stories by Michael E Thornley

Twist-of-fate Michael-Thornley AuthorTwists of Fate
A series of Short Stories by Michael E Thornley

Twists of Fate is a spellbinding collection of 5 short stories set in the land down-under by Australian Author Michael E Thornley. The decisions and consequent outcomes made by the individual characters gives credence to the saying ” You Reap what you Sow’.

However, the choices that we make in life may not necessarily provide us with the outcome we desire. Yet it may reward us with the future we deserve, whether we wish it or not!. So be careful what you wish for as it just may come true!

Written in the narrative style of the ‘Twilight Zone’ the Twists of Fate may not be what you expected. It certainly was not what the characters in the book expected!… that is part of the charm and enjoyment of this series of short stories by Michael E Thornley.

TWISTS OF FATE includes 5 Short Stories!

1. The Ultimate Collection
2. The Hunter
3. Nullarbor Dreaming
4. Age of Chivalry
5. The Compulsive Liar TWISTS OF FATE includes 5 Short Stories!

Quote from Twists of Fate – the ‘Age of Chivalry’
As she sprinted down the street, her high heals now swinging in her hand, as quite wisely she was not about to tempt fate any longer, she glanced down at her watch and with some relief, noticed that she still had two minutes to spare before the bus would arrive promptly as usual.

However as she rounded the corner, she saw the rear of the bus as it drove away proudly advertising her favourite breakfast spread Vegemite with that all too familiar logo ‘We’re happy little Vegemites as bright as bright can be’…… “ I am NOT a Happy Little Vegemite” she mumbled angrily. The bus was early today of all days and, as if mocking her, backfired leaving a cloud of black sooty smoke which now rather insultingly, enveloped Mary completely.”

Hope – Do not give up. Try One More Time

hope never-give-up

When the world says give up, hope whispers, try one more time ~ Unknown

Just think of the future… think of your dreams…….think beyond the trials and tribulations of the now! Whilst you are alive there is always hope to ‘live the dream’ and make it a reality and remember….there is always a solution to any problem. Only that sometimes you may have to delve a little deeper into your soul to retrieve the answer.

‘Be strong now as things will get better. It may be stormy now but it will not rain forever.’

Now I too have known sorrow and despair in my life and indeed most of us have or will in time. This is a natural part of the Circle of Life. Yet never forget that there are countless numbers of ‘brothers & sisters’ of humanity experiencing a depth of despair far greater than you or I could ever imagine. And yet they survive through having Hope.

Hope that their circumstances will improve.
Hope that their basic needs of food, water and shelter will materialise.
Hope that their loved ones will regain their health.

Where there is Love there is Hope

Our needs and desires are all relative. However we all possess the ability to promote Hope in our lives. There is always light at the end of the proverbial tunnel and whilst you may see your life at present deep within the depths of a dark and damp tunnel remember this! The very nature of a tunnel is that there is an entry and an exit point and the light DOES exist at the end of this tunnel. It is up to you as to whether you take Hope by the arm and continue together along that tunnel to the light.

“Hope is not mere wishful thinking. It is the precursor of a new dawn that slowly, steadily and unerringly comes to the fore and eventually grows into reality’s existence.”  ~ Sri Chinmoy

Who do you think you are? Looking into your Family History

Who do you think you are?

” Who Do You Think You Are? is a British genealogy documentary series that has aired on the BBC since 2004. In each episode, a celebrity traces their family tree with the assistance of Ancestry dot com. It has since been franchised and adapted in 10 different countries around the world including the USA and Australia.”

Recently I have been viewing a number of episodes of  ‘Who do you think you are ‘ on Youtube. And over the years I have thoroughly enjoyed watching this program and sharing in the journeys of the various celebrities that have agreed to look into their family origins with the help of Ancestry dot com and the BBC, NBC or SBS . As you will see, celebrity or not, their reaction is no different to those experienced by my own clients or indeed myself when doing Genealogical research with Thornley Genealogical Services! And you too will find that all of your emotions will be impacted as you share in a tear or a smile with them…

Comedian Billy Connolly discovers that he is more than a working class Glaswegian, a Scot with Irish Immigrants in the family… he actually discovers a link to generations of his family living in India and more!

When you are conducting research into your own families origins, your inquisitiveness will be further tantalised as you move back through the generations.  I have been conducting my own family research for over 35 years now and my own family tree has 16,000 + individuals whom are all related to me by blood or marriage.

An important thing to remember is to be open to the information that you will receive about the past. In watching  just some of the ‘Who do you think you are‘ episodes you will see that in all cases they are humbled by events of the past and the lives that their forebears had to endure.

Additionally, we can not and should not judge our forebears on today’s values. The majority of them lived at a time which was very different to today’s way of life…. even 50 years ago…. and much of what we take for granted now, in such a materialistic society, could never have been imagined back then.

The world’s first ‘Super Model’ Twiggy finds a ‘criminal’ element in her forebears. Yet when the circumstances are looked at in their entirety, a sad story of survival emerges.

Featured Celebrities-
UK Billy Connolly, Twiggy, Stephen Fry, Jeremy Irons, Joh Hurt & MORE
USA
Lisa Cudrow, Lionel Ritchie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Helen Hunt & MORE
Australia
Sigrid Thornton, Jack Thompson, John Wood, Geoffrey Rush & MORE

Find Out More!

Many people that have researched their family tree say that they feel fulfilled and have a greater sense of ‘belonging’. Family, Nationality, Ethnicity along with Humility and Understanding all play their part in growing your Family Tree.

So I encourage you to sit back and enjoy this fascinating series. And at the same time, contemplate looking back into your own origins……. I can help you with that! 🙂

Rumi – Poet and Scholar

rumi quotes michael-thornley rumi poet scholarRumi Quotes
The Love and Wisdom of Rumi, Persian Poet & Scholar

Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī also known as Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Balkhī and more popularly simply as Rumiwas a 13th-century Persian poet, jurist, Islamic scholar, theologian and Sufi mystic.

His work transcends location, ethnicities, time, language and spirituality and has millions of followers the world over.

Rumi quotes
Some of his Love and Wisdom quotes:-

“Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere. They’re in each other all along.”

“Love is the bridge between you and everything.”

“Let the beauty of what you love be what you do.”

“In your light I learn how to love. In your beauty, how to make poems. You dance inside my chest where no-one sees you, but sometimes I do, and that sight becomes this art.”

“Wherever you are, and whatever you do, be in love.”

“That which is false troubles the heart, but truth brings joyous tranquility.”

“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.”

“Raise your words, not your voice. It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder”

“What you seek is seeking you.”

As an admirer and ‘student’ of Rumi’s work, I am proud and humbled to be sharing his wisdom with my own photographs. (You are welcome to share them provided they are in their original and complete form)

Emerald City – Grant Dodwell’s Australian National Theatre Live

Emerald-City David-Williamson

Grant Dodwell’s Australian National Theatre Live brings Emerald City into cinemas.

Recently on my Gypsy Traveller Tour of Eastern Australia, I had the good fortune to be invited to the screening of Grant Dodwell’s Australian National Theatre Live production of ‘Emerald City’ in Nambour, Queensland.

Emerald City is a 1987 play by Australian playwright David Williamson, a satire about two entertainment industries: film and publishing.

“This very 1980’s social comedy — about a successful writer who moves from rainy, serious Melbourne to sunny, hedonistic Sydney and falls in love with the tantalizing appeal of a house by the water — still works.”

Michael-Thornley Grant-Dodwell

Author Michael Thornley meets Actor Producer Grant Dodwell in Nambour, Queensland

The Australian National Theatre Live ‘ANT’ is bringing the ‘Live’ theatre experience to a number of areas in Australia that may not have ready access to live plays at the major theatre companies.

The majority of these theatre companies are capital city based and with the vast distances that occur in Australia, ANT saw an opportunity to provide the next best thing to an actual live performance. That is to film a live performance in such a way that the audience can absorb the inclusive ambiance that live theatre creates. In other words you feel that you are part of the play and that you are actually an integral component of  the ‘set’ and not simply seated as an observer.

Having experienced ‘live theatre’ on many occasions I can honestly say that this concept works! Well done Grant and the team! I wish you all every success.

So do yourself a favour, if you have the opportunity ensue that you see the Australian National Theatre Live’s film production of the Aussie classic play ‘Emerald City’ by playwright David Williamson.

Dating on a Budget

Dating on a Burget cover (2)Dating on a Budget – Living and Loving on a Shoestring!

A humorous yet informative guide to those readying themselves for a journey into the world of dating. It also provides thought provoking ideas for couples looking to bring fun and frivolity back into their relationships.

There are practical solutions, numerous cost saving measures and handy tips for those on a limited budget. A lighthearted yet sincere look into world of dating.

Author Michael E Thornley supports many of the suggestions with his whimsical quips and forthright encouragement (and sometimes discouragement should the situation require it. e.g. Like “run for the hills “ 🙂

We are sure you will enjoy this guide and Happy Dating!

Here is an excerpt from the book………

First Date tips

  • Be polite, courteous and thoughtful.
(Say your pleases and thank you’s and put that cell phone away!)

  • Do NOT talk too much about your ex’s
(unless you want to get rid of your date as soon as you have had a feed, then by all means go for it! Ex away!)

  • A man should be a gentleman…. a lady a lady. (Well for the first 15 minutes at least whilst you size each other up.)

  • Listen carefully to what the other is saying and even more importantly to what they are NOT saying.
( If they are talking with their back to you or ogling the wait staff, then I think you should order the cheapest thing on the menu if you are paying or the dearest if you are not)

  • Smile and look the other person in the eyes when you speak to them
( But don’t smile if they are telling you a sad story. And please don’t give that nervous cheezy grin you have or they will be thinking like… ‘Weird’!…. Either way make sure you clean your teeth before hand to remove any evidence of the days snacks that only now become apparent when you smile)

  • Learn their name quickly!
( don’t get the previous date nor the one following this one confused with the one siting opposite you now! This is MOST important! You know the hesitation when you go ummm.. Sally?…Jessy?…Raphael?)

  • Laugh sincerely even if the joke is lame.
( But don’t snort or laugh so loud causing the drink waiter to drop their tray of glasses in fright!)

  • If fine dining, ensure you place the napkin on your lap, if indeed the waiter has not officiated in that duty when you first sit down.
( remember the napkin goes on your lap NOT tucked into the top of your open shirt or blouse. AND if you insist on doing this then be careful not to mistake the linen table cloth for a napkin, otherwise ….well you know…..first impressions and all that with the food and drinks now on the floor with silence throughout the dining room.)”

Synchronicity – signs, signs, everywhere are signs

DalaiLama synchronicity  Synchronicity – ” the simultaneous occurrence of events which appear significantly related but have no discernible causal connection.”  ….or do they?

Seeing ‘signs’ or recognising  interrelated occurrences happens to all of us.  I do not think that anyone could deny this has not happened at least once in their lives. And for many of us it has occurred on numerous occasions.

So why does it happen? Well there any many reasons, theories and belief systems that offer an explanation. Yet regardless of your own personal view on this, I am sure that we all agree that it can and does happen.

Research has confirmed Synchronicity?

It happens to everyone sooner or later: A certain number will just pop up wherever you go; an old friend you haven’t seen in 20 years since high school contacts you  the very  same day you’re looking at their picture in a school yearbook; you’re singing a song and you turn on the radio and there is that  same song is playing….  the list is endless.

Many simply say “oh it is just a co-incidence’. Well let me ask you ‘How many co-incidences are happening in your life?’ Can it ALL be a co-incidence?

Yet others might think of it in terms of the odds. If there is a one-in-a-million chance of that particular coincidence happening, why make such a big deal of it? For example, somebody has to win the lottery! I accept that this viewpoint has a certain validity as synchronicity is part and parcel of physical laws. It doesn’t defy the natural order of events…. it simply raises more questions than can easily be answered by a cause-and-effect equation.

So when synchronicity happens, many people overlook it or call it something else. They might say, “I got lucky,”  or “It came out of the blue.”. Then when asked if they have experienced synchronicity, they can’t remember any. All those incidents are filed away in their sub-conscious, but under the category of luck.

” We experience synchronicity most often when we’re open and aware, which in turn is affected by the outer conditions in which we find ourselves and the inner conditions in which we put ourselves. ”

  • Special circumstances such as births, deaths, and times of upheaval are outer conditions that push us toward openness because, as the ground shifts beneath our feet, we feel more vulnerable.
  • Mundane circumstances of daily life can be rich with synchronicity if we have the right inner conditions—if we make ourselves more open to the world through personal awareness and inner work.

Strings of Synchronicities

When we are beginning a relationship for example, synchronicity seems to appear all over the place. We feel light-headed, happy, open; the world is smiling back at us, giving the relationship a sense of destiny and ‘producing signs.

As the song goes ‘Signs, signs everywhere a sign” and for me I place allot of importance on this. I see the Universe is guiding me and confirming that I am on the right path. Others may call it God, spirit or some other entity or ideal. Yet it all comes down to ‘It actually happens’.

The sceptics may still call it a coincidence, yet by calling it something they are acknowledging it is happening 🙂 I rest my case 😉
