Autopilot – turn it off!

Our guest blogger today is Catriona Pollard.  When I read her Email  I instantly related to having been on Autopilot in the past and have, in the last few years, made a personal choice and commitment to ‘stop, look & listen’ to life.

Knowing that many of you remain on Autopilot, I wanted to share her message with you and for you ALL to ‘stop look and listen’ in your own lives…. it IS a beautiful world out there if you WANT to find it!

It’s time to stop running on autopilot

” My parents visited me the other day. Often we go for lunch or coffee, but it was a beautiful Sunday afternoon so we went for a stroll. As we walked my parents remarked on houses, and fences, and trees…a running commentary on our walk.

I have walked past these houses, fences and trees many times but no longer notice them. Through my parents’ eyes, I looked at them and saw them in a different way.

It made me think. How much in our lives do we no longer notice? I decided to test this idea.

Walking backwards

On the bush track I walk most days I decided to do my circuit in the opposite direction. Do you know what happened? I got lost twice. Seriously! I couldn’t believe it. I missed the start of one section and had to double back.

At one point I was standing looking at the entrances of two tracks and simply couldn’t figure out which one was my track. In fact, I never even knew there were two tracks in that section. Astounding!

I realised that often I’m lost in my thoughts while walking – which is not a bad thing as it’s my time to problem solve and come up with new ideas – but clearly I’m not taking notice of my surroundings either.

Turning off autopilot

How often are we on autopilot?

  • Have you ever driven to work and got to the car park and completely not remembered the drive?
  • Do you constantly check your emails on your phone, even though it states, “Last updated 2 minutes ago”?
  • Are you just so in your routine you rarely do anything spontaneous?

It’s really interesting to consider these questions. Even though I don’t consider that I’m living a life on autopilot, clearly at times I am. Now I’m trying to notice if I’m simply following a routine, and if possible, to snap out of autopilot and be in the moment instead.

What about you? Maybe it’s time to ditch your personal sat nav and think about achieving some new goals…such as stepping into the spotlight.

Here’s to seeing you in the spotlight.

Sort through the Chickens to find the Eagles!

eagle-flying sort-through-chickens-fly-with-eagles” Sort through the Chickens to find the Eagles! Do you want to scratch around like chickens or soar with the Eagles?”

I love this analogy and this is true in life as in business. Many are simply happy and content with living their same old same old routine and that is fine. Whilst others wish to experience more in life and push out and motivate themselves to improve their lives…. that is fine too.

However, we will find that some of these chickens are envious of the eagles and so they mock the young eaglets as they try to fly. Yet when the Eagles do finally fly, the chickens become jealous of the freedom that the eagles have achieved in soaring high.

We all need to reassess our life’s plan at time. So ask yourself this question “am I happy with where my life is heading to or indeed where I have arrived at this particular moment in time? If so great 🙂 ……..  If not then ask yourself this “‘ What can I DO to make the necessary changes to get back on my life’s pathway. Remember, this is YOUR pathway.

To achieve this journey you need to remove those negative jealous chickens and surround yourself with other eaglets and eagles. Follow and learn from those that have achieved the life that you wish to have. Make a commitment to yourself to ‘Achieve Your Dreams’. There are very few things in life that are impossible to achieve. I agree that it is unlikely that I will ever be President of the United States or the Pope. However with all due respect to those that are elected to these most important public offices, I have no desire to be either of these roles, even if I could. This is NOT my life plan. But it is theirs and I admire and respect those that achieve their ultimate goal.

I have worked hard and long to get the lifestyle I wish. Yes I have made a great many sacrifices in both time and money. This is all part of the adventure! Yet with receiving some support along the way from those that at least believed in me, even if they do not necessarily agree with my method of achieving my lifestyle,  I am now well on my way to achieving my dreams!

YOU can do it too. Look around you. Who or what is not serving you and hindering you. If it is a thought in your own mind that is stopping you from achieving your goals, then work through it! Push out of your comfort zone, push away those that are planting these negative seeds and take a chance! If you don’t take chances in life then you will never achieve your full potential. Take a small step now…. then another and you will see that it is not that bad afterall. Yes it can be a daunting  but ‘just do it!.

Music has the Ability to lift You from the Depths of Despair

Hi,
Well the past week for one reason or another has been a ‘tough’ week for me. But alas I   always manage to get through it. Those that know me personally know I suffer from a form of Depression …it is actually common knowledge as I openly talk about it. NO not just being depressed or having the ‘blues’. It is a physical illness. But it is what it is.

However, I am also a strong individual and I always manage to find ways to self motivate myself through my creativity such as my writing. Talking of books in the last 2 weeks I have published 4 Books on Amazon.com in Kindle form ( E-book)
Twists of Fate
A Day in the Life
Dating on a Budget
Who is in Your Family Tree

However I also find I resonate with my music even more at these times. And with that I made two incredible discoveries. One NEW and the other was looking further into the background of a song I liked. AND it has certainly inspired me to try my best to keep going………. especially on the  path of life I have chosen and the Universe, in all HER wisdom has chosen for me. Not quite sure what SHE has in mind for my future but hey, I will continue on this path of creativity and discovery.

Secondly, last year I discovered Postmodern Jukebox and the song ‘All about that Bass’

I looked further into the band behind it and discovered the talents of Scott Bradlee. How about I let him explain what they are all about as I share the email I received from Scott with you!…… Michael

Postmodern Jukebox

We take pop music back in time. Check us out on YouTube / iTunes / on tour www.postmodernjukebox.com

Hey there Michael,

Dust off the turntable, fix yourself a stiff drink, and make yourself at home. Welcome to the world of Postmodern Jukebox.

What is Postmodern Jukebox? To put it simply, it’s pop music in a time machine. It’s today’s hits as they would have sounded if they were recorded decades ago, by the stars of yesteryear. But, thanks to the amazing community that has grown around this concept, it’s become so much more than that.

I started putting Postmodern Jukebox videos on YouTube back when I lived in a basement apartment in Queens, NY, and I’ve continued making them ever since. Every Thursday, I release a new Postmodern Jukebox (or ‘PMJ,’ if you’re hip like that) video that puts a different popular song through the ‘vintage’ filter, with the help of a large rotating cast of some of the best musicians and vocalists in the world.

There are literally HUNDREDS of these videos in the PMJ YouTube library, so that’s a great place to start. The Postmodern Jukebox universe is not just online, though. You can also experience PMJ live on tour all over the world and see these incredibly talented performers bring these arrangements to life. It’s the New Year’s Eve party in Old Hollywood that Sinatra would have attended; come dressed in your most glamorous attire and dance the night away to the songs of today as you’ve never heard them before.

Most importantly, this is a community. What started in my basement apartment became a YouTube phenomenon – and then a touring phenomenon – all thanks to amazing people like you that know the importance of keeping real, live music alive. From this moment on, consider yourself a part of Postmodern Jukebox. We’re building this very special place together, and the adventure is just beginning. But for now, the night is young. Let’s fire up the Jukebox and enjoy another tune.

Work-Family Balance Issues? Try These 9 Tips

Today’s guest post courtesy of Matt Llyod CEO MOBE.

Michael Ellis Thornley

work-family-balance-issues-try-these-9-tips

“It’s not surprising that women and men alike say balancing work life with family life is an ongoing challenge. Juggling kids, a spouse and a career aren’t as easy as carving out time for each; it’s more like playing a 3-D chess game, which requires skill, advanced strategies and integrated thinking.

Instead of moving chess pieces on multiple boards, however, balancing the demands of work and family—especially for entrepreneurs—requires careful coordination, organization, communication and delegation. The good news is; it can be done. To help you attain a richer, more rewarding and balanced life, here are nine tips for balancing work and family:

1.  Rally your troops.

If your goal is to find balance, you’ll need to integrate your needs, along with those of your kids, spouse, career and friends, into a whole. But don’t do it alone. Get help from family, friends, neighbors and others when you need additional support. If you prepare for the unexpected by putting a solid contingency plan in place, you’ll find those last-minute emergencies to be a little less jarring. The key is to allow yourself to ask for and receive help.

2.  No bad feelings.

Everyone has been subjected to programming, and one of the ways people become conditioned over time is to feel guilty when problems arise. If you want to balance the ever-changing demands of work with your family responsibilities, start by saying bye-bye to guilt. It does no good because it keeps you rooted in what went wrong instead of what needs to happen to make it right—and it will only delay your progress toward attaining balance.

3.  Know when enough is enough and spread the word.

In a perfect world, you might not need to set boundaries … but here on Earth, you do. The limits you set are the only thing that could protect you from the actions of others. By defining what’s acceptable to you, you can determine how to manage your time, space and emotional availability.

Establishing clear boundaries makes the extent of your responsibilities clear. It also signals others regarding the types of demands you’re willing to accept. If you don’t set boundaries, you’ll find it much harder to say no. Remember, these are reasonable boundaries that you’re implementing for the well-being of your loved ones, and they’re necessary to balance the demands of work and family.

4.  Whose standards? Your standards.

The key to living a richer, more rewarding life is to set your own standards. That means ditching any illusions of perfectionism. Aim for small compromises that don’t undercut the interests of your spouse, kids, boss, friends or close family members. As long as you’re comfortable with the standards you’re setting for your work and home life—and your family’s needs and boss’ expectations are being met—you’re golden.

5.  Find Your “Alone Zone.”

With so many demands placed upon you, it’s easy to lose sight of your own needs. So, go for a walk, soak in the tub or find some other way to unwind, de-stress and ease the tension. Carving out a little “me time” will do wonders for your state of mind and overall health, and it will also benefit your family and co-workers.

6.  Everything should be in its place.

To effectively balance work and family, you’ll need to get organized. Start by setting your priorities, and be prepared to delegate. Remember that lists are your friend (and they’re re-usable!). Be sure to make room for an easy-to-reach calendar, so you can map out everyone’s activities.

7.  Stretch to stay flexible.

When you decided to have kids, you basically traded your what is for a giant what could be. So, embrace it. Cut yourself some slack when you miss an occasional goal or deadline. Just don’t get too comfortable, and be prepared to assume responsibility for any must-have projects or tasks that need to be completed, whether for work or home.

Staying flexible like this is one way to reduce the stress that comes with juggling multiple responsibilities. Another is to stretch your idea of success to allow for changes to your original game plan. Sometimes you have to revise your goals to allow for different-but-just-as-challenging ones. And that’s okay.

8.  Enjoy time with your family.

Your family is your greatest source of love and strength. By setting aside time to do things together, you’ll be investing directly in the people through whom all of your successes have relevance. So, commit to being with them and enjoying that time together. Create family traditions, play together and develop relationships with your spouse and children that will fuel your achievements in other areas of your life.

9.  Integrate for balance.

To find harmony in your life, you’ll need to integrate your work, family and friends into a unified whole. There’s no one way to do this—it depends on what you deem acceptable—so strive for balance and maintain perspective when the road gets bumpy. It’s all about finding ways to blend the needs of your loved ones with the requirements of your career.

Managing kids, a spouse and a career is never easy, especially for entrepreneurs. But you can attain a richer, more rewarding and balanced life if you develop a creative way to balance your family responsibilities with the demands of your career. Keeping these nine tips in mind should help.

Let me tell you a story about the word YES

Let me tell you a story about the word YES

“A friend of mine is finishing off her Yoga Teacher Training Diploma, and the other day she had the decision whether to say YES or NO to a spotlight moment.

While she has done yoga for years, she has never professionally taught it. Needless to say it’s pretty daunting to teach people something where they may get injured – and she has never had to stand in front of people to teach anything before.

Oh, and did I mention, she is over 60 years old, and learning with a bunch of young things. Amazing!

So the other day she went to a yoga class and the teacher didn’t turn up. Someone who knew she was finishing off her Diploma said: “Kathryn, you should teach the class.”

These are the spotlight moments I talk about all of the time. You can say yes or you can say no.

So imagine her situation. She has very little experience in teaching yoga, and only practiced teaching with a small group of friends. Here were 18 people staring at her, waiting for her answer.

She had done no prep, so if she said yes, she would have to think on her feet. If she screwed up it would impact her confidence and how the people in the class thought about her.

What do you think her answer was, yes or no?

Catriona Pollard

When she recounted the story to me she said my TEDx talk about “Being open to yes” flashed in front of her eyes. Even though I wasn’t there, I was willing her on. She thought – I’m going to say YES!

Filled with trepidation, a bit of anxiety, and huge amount of bravery, she walked to the front of the class and taught her first yoga class. And when it finished, she received a round of applause with people asking her to run more classes.

If she hadn’t said yes, she would still not know her capability as a yoga teacher or have the opportunity to share her beautiful energy with the class.

In my experience saying that first yes is like letting the genie out of the bottle. It can lead to many yeses that are full of magic and wonder.

Yes can open up opportunities you never even dreamed of. So I’ll leave you with a question. What are you going to say yes to today?

Here’s to seeing you in the spotlight.

The Four Pillars of a Good Life

the-4-pillars-of-the-good-life

The Four Pillars of a Good Life are – Health, Wealth, Love and Happiness.

AGood Life’ is relative to the individual and the ‘4 Pillars of a ‘Good Life– Health, Wealth,Love and Happiness’ are the main criteria in varying degrees to achieve this goal. Together, they can create the lifestyle you seek and the ‘Good Life‘  you deserve!

FILE - In this Feb. 18, 2011 file photo, Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama gestures as he addresses the Mumbai University students in Mumbai, India. The Dalai Lama said Thursday, March 10, 2011, that he will give up his political role in Tibet's government-in-exile, shifting that power to an elected representative. The Tibetan spiritual leader, speaking on the anniversary of the 1959 Tibetan uprising against Chinese control, said the time has come "to devolve my formal authority to the elected leader." The Dalai Lama tells us that “The point to life is happiness.” Yet so many of us struggle to find it in a world full of stress and expectation.

People tend to believe that in order to achieve happiness you need only have money (wealth) and to amass a host of material objects. But to have wealth alone does not necessarily bring you health, love and/or happiness.  Additionally, many people judge success purely on wealth, yet it is a combination of all these factors that achieves positive results in your life.

Remember, we should also be rich of heart and soul as well , an important asset to have in driving your passion to achieve your goals. And believing in yourself and having the faith and fortitude to step outside the square or at the very least to push out from your bubble is paramount in obtaining the ‘Good Life

I firmly believe that a combination of Wealth, Health and Love can indeed equal Happiness.  A ‘Good Life’ is a balance of all these factors. :)…………..

Over the last 10 years or so I have certainly lived life and followed my heart in so many ways….I have loved and been loved however it is not just about one’s relationship with people it is about experiencing your passions, your dreams and your desires too

Like many of us, I have battled through situations yet I have always survived…this is life! As I said, I know I am not alone on this type of journey, but my point is that it was my journey, my choice, my experience and I have no regrets. I accept where I am at this moment and I will choose the path I take in the future.

So live your life and don’t settle for the mundane nor make excuses anymore…..stop complaining, whinging or criticising others…..it is their life, their choice and you have your own life to lead. So step up, create it, experience it and live it today!

Live and Love in the Moment

Live-Love-in-the-Moment- Michael-ThornleyLive and Love in the moment with Michael Thornley

Live and Love in the moment is a thought process that many of us adopt as we grow older.

We learn that, whilst we should endeavour to learn from our past, we should not dwell on the negatives but draw on the positives of the experience (there is always at least one positive in every situation).

AND nor should we have regrets….. frankly I have never had  regrets but I have certainly had some HUGE learning experiences in my life 😉

Along with living and loving in the moment, what we can also do to enhance our life’s journey is to have dreams. And when I say dreams I mean the personal goals we set for our future. Be excited and make plans but be flexible as your goals evolve.

In the interim just live and love in the moment. Be grateful for what you have; love those who sincerely support you for being the person you are; welcome opportunities and try new experiences that will help you grow. And don’t forget to learn something new each and everyday 🙂

blessings.

Hey,

So, the other day I was getting a hair cut.

I’m sitting there while some guy is washing my hair – for an uncomfortably long time.

One thing I always try to avoid is unproductive uses of my time, and this was one of those moments.

So I decide to go to my iphone, and pull up my Audible.com app.

And I start looking for books to buy

There are hundreds of them in there. If my haircut had gone for longer, I could have continued scrolling through thousands of them.

I end up buying 20 of them – mainly just from the titles and covers, and whether I’d heard good things about them.

Here are the names of them in case you’re curious:

1. Time Management Made Simple by Brian Tracy
2. The Warren Buffett Stock Portfolio: When and Why He Is Investing in Them by Mary Buffett, David Clark
3. Leading Change: Why Transformation Efforts Fail by John P. Kotter
4. The Due Diligence Handbook for Commercial Real Estate: A Proven System to Save Time, Money, Headaches and Create Value When Buying Commercial Real Estate by Brian Hennessey
5. Financial Independence by Jim Rohn
6. The Laptop Millionaire: How Anyone Can Escape the 9 to 5 and Make Money Online by Mark Anastasi
7. The Intelligent Asset Allocator: How to Build Your Portfolio to Maximize Returns and Minimize Risk by William Bernstein
8. The E-Myth Seminar: Taking Charge of Your Business and Your Life by Michael E. Gerber
9. Beat the Crowd: How You Can Out-Invest the Herd by Thinking Differently by Kenneth L. Fisher, Elisabeth Dellinger
10. What It Takes to Be Number One: Vince Lombardi on Leadership by Vince Lombardi
11. The 80/20 Principle and 92 Other Powerful Laws of Nature: The Science of Success by Richard Koch
12. Commercial Real Estate Investing: The Essentials to Buying and Managing Commercial Properties: Financial Independence Books by Clayton Geoffreys
13. The Four Filters Invention of Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger (Second Edition) by Bud Labitan
14. It’s Not Luck: Marketing, Production, and the Theory of Constraints by Eliyahu M. Goldratt
15. The Warren Buffett Way, Second Edition by Robert G. Hagstrom
16. Den of Thieves by James B. Stewart
17. Passport to Exotic Real Estate: Buying U.S. and Foreign Property in Breathtaking, Beautiful, Faraway Lands by Steve Bergsman
18. The Lean CEO: Leading the Way to World-Class Excellence by Jacob Stoller
19. Piranha Marketing: The Seven Success Multiplying Factors to Dominate the Market You Enter by Joe Polish, Tim Paulson
20. The Chief Financial Officer: The Economist by Jason Karaian

I used to read paper books a lot, but not so much these days.

Now I prefer to consume my information visually, or through audio – listening to them on my headphones.

The great thing about having books in audio format on your phone, is that during all those moments when you’re unproductive, you can be listening and increasing your business knowledge.

So when you’re traveling to and from work (if you still have a job)…

Or standing in long queues…

Or laying in bed at night, unable to sleep…

Or walking to and from different places…

you can be feeding your brain useful business knowledge, and gaining an advantage over all your competitors.

The average person spends easily 90 minutes a day in these kinds of situations – and the average person wastes these opportunities to improve their knowledge (and then funnily enough, the average person complains about how difficult it is to get ahead!).

I receive no compensation for telling you this – but you should go to Audible.com, sign up for a monthly subscription, and start listening to business audio books just like I do.
